Fleas

Fleas are very widespread parasites among dogs and cats. Some pets experience very little harm from the bites of these beings but a number of less privileged pets get an allergic response to flea saliva, leading to a harsh skin reaction known as flea bite dermatitis. Fleas bite their host pet and suck the blood for nourishment, leaving saliva behind under the pet’s skin.  Recent scientific studies have shown that flea saliva contains around fifteen diverse allergens that can lead to sensitive reactions in dogs and cats.

The frequent problem of flea bite dermatitis affects both cats and dogs of all ages, genders and breeds. In pets with this state, the flea bites themselves usually become red, swollen and severely itchy. This causes chronic inflammation and scratching of the skin as well as ongoing uneasiness for your pet.

Signs and symptoms of Fleas

Dogs and cats with flea bite dermatitis usually show signs of chronic biting, scraping and rubbing their skin, particularly around the base of the tail.  This may, in turn, lead to hair loss and thinning of the coat. The skin may emerge red and inflamed.  A flea allergy will also be obviously seasonal and cause worse symptoms during summer and fall when fleas are most productive.

Treatment for Fleas

In the contemporary medicines only antibiotics and anti protozoa are given. In ayurveda there are many herbs that are extremely beneficial in avoiding such conditions. Below are few of many prestigious herbs that are very effective in treating fleas.

Turmeric – Turmeric is one of the best known herbal anti biotic present in nature. It represses the microbial infection and renders the bacteria inactive. It is taken orally as well is used to apply on the affected part. In case of ear infection it is mixed with the sesame oil and then drops of it is but into the ears.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) - The juice of the coriander leaves mixed with some turmeric (haldi) is usually given to a patient who suffers from ringworm infection. It is also helpful if the skin becomes extremely dry and develops ringworm, particularly in the winter season.

Khadir – This herb is one of the best herbs in treating various skin related disorders. It being cool in potency is very helpful in suppressing any kind of skin allergy and infections. Acacia catechu is the herb that is being used to treat skin rash and also is a good disinfectant.
