This is a much generalized term that is used in referring to all kinds of gums related problems. These are very common amongst dogs due to various reasons. These may include bleeding of gums, pains, odor from mouth and many more.
Food particles and bacteria collect along the gum line taking a form of a plaque. If this plaque is not removed, minerals in the saliva merge with the plaque and form tartar, a calculus that sticks to the teeth. Plaque starts to mineralize three to five days after it forms. The tartar is irksome to the gums and causes an inflammation commonly known as gingivitis. One of the most commonly seen symptoms is the reddening of the gums adjoining the teeth. It also causes halitosis
If the calculus is not detached, it builds up under the gums. It breaks up the gums from the teeth to form "pockets" and support even more bacterial and microbial growth. At this point the harm is permanent, and called "periodontal" disease. It can be very agonizing and can lead to loosening teeth, abscesses formation, and bone loss or infection.
