Similar to humans, dogs have two sets of teeth in their live cycle. The twenty eight baby teeth erupt through the gums between the 3rd and 6th weeks of age. Puppies do not have to crush much food, so they do not have molars. Puppy teeth begin to drop and be reinstated by lasting adult teeth at about four months of age.
Although there is some disparity in breeds, most adult dogs have forty two teeth, with the molars erupting at last, at about 6 or 7 months.
Similar to people, dogs can have tooth problems varying from retained baby teeth and malocclusion to tooth putrefaction. Since healthy mouths rely on healthy teeth, pet owners should occasionally check pet teeth, give chew bones and toys, use biscuit treats so that they exercise their jaws, and feed a kibbled diet.
The roots of baby teeth must be absorbed as adult teeth blow up, but if this incorporation is retarded, the baby tooth does not give passage to the new tooth. Retained baby teeth can source a bad bite i.e. a malocclusion that can lead to tooth decay or peutrification and other related problems. If a baby tooth does not fall out when the adult tooth grows in, it must be detached
