Urinary tract infections (UTI’s) are painful and extremely agonizing. They are more common in cats than dogs and can be caused by bacterial infection, bladder stones or urolithiasis. Infection can engross one or more parts of the urinary tract. A bladder infection is known as lower urinary tract infection (LUTI). Kidney infections are known as upper urinary tract infections (UUTI).
Lower urinary tract infection can rise into the kidneys and conversely, kidney infections can lead to the bladder with bacteria causing infection. The ureters and urethra are hardly ever sole sites of infection and are usually infected in conjunction with the closest anatomic site.
